When I was a kid, one of my favorite books was Toby Tyler, about a boy who joins a circus. Water for Elephants is the adult version of Toby Tyler. The story is told in flashbacks by Jacob, who is living out his days in a nursing home and reflecting on his life traveling with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, which is still in his blood at ninety-something. As the reviewer on Amazon.com writes: The ending is absolutely ludicrous and really quite lovely.
