The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill

The story takes place during the 1700’s when a young girl is kidnapped in West Africa and taken to America as a slave. As she fights for freedom for herself and for others, she travels to Nova Scotia and eventually back to Africa.

I found the story of Aminata hard to read at times, knowing that the fictional story is true to the history of slavery. But it was a good read and I was interested to learn about the Black Loyalists of Nova Scotia.

The book of Negroes was the 2009 pick of CBC’s Canada Reads.
