The story takes place during the 1700’s when a young girl is kidnapped in West Africa and taken to America as a slave. As she fights for freedom for herself and for others, she travels to Nova Scotia and eventually back to Africa.I found the story of Aminata hard to read at times, knowing that the fictional story is true to the history of slavery. But it was a good read and I was interested to learn about the Black Loyalists of Nova Scotia.
The book of Negroes was the 2009 pick of CBC’s Canada Reads.
